A Cure for the Blues

bday cakeI tend to get depressed on my birthday every year. It’s not so much because I’m aging, although that is a small part. I have my reasons, and they’re a bit personal to write on my blog. But, keep reading and you’ll see how I cured the birthday blues.

This year, in an attempt to ward off the despair, I kept myself busy. I made plans in advance to do things that would keep my mind off the fact that it was my birthday. To try and keep in a positive frame of mind, before I started the day, I posted a blog with Quick Quotes about being grateful.

One thing on my schedule was to spend a few hours at the mall with my husband. Our mall is extremely well-shopped, so we went in the morning when it first opened before it got  busy. Almost every time we go there (which is not often, due to crowds, lines, difficult parking, etc), I joke about wanting to ride on the merry-go-round in the center of the mall. It’s a full size carousel with a second level. Even though I joke, I’d really love to ride it.

PhantasiaABDKNot the actual carousel. This one is from Wikipedia Commons.

When we finished shopping, we had to walk by the merry-go-round to exit the mall. My husband asked me if I wanted to go for a ride for my birthday. I stopped and watched it spinning around. I eyed the people riding it, only a few young parents, each holding a child on a galloping horse. Naww, I couldn’t. We’d look too silly. We were old enough to be those little babies grandparents!

Then I remembered one of the three quotes I posted before I left for the mall.

The aging process has you firmly in its grasp, if you never get the urge to swing on a swing.

Since my birthday was depressing, and I wanted to remain positive, I decided to take my own advice. I didn’t want the aging process to have me firmly in its grasp, and I had the urge to go on a merry-go-around. So, we went for a ride all on our own, without a child at our sides.

I recommend it for all ages.

  1. I LOVE that you went on a merry-go-round ride, Lori! I LOVE that you gave yourself that gift of going-outside-the-box of your thoughts. Oh I hope we can always remember to nudge ourselves out of that box. Happy birthday. May you have many merry-go-round rides ahead!

  2. Always remember, he/she who has the most birthdays lives the longest. I hope yours was wonderful. It looks like you had fun on that double-decker merry-go-round. I’d love to ride that myself!. 🙂

  3. Love the picture of you, so cute, so young looking (not a grandma look), and with a happy pretty smile, dear Lori. We taught you & Gary well,” Live well, laugh often and love much”. Have a wonderful conference, thanks for sharing such a happy thought. Love you much, MaJoan

  4. Happy Birthday 🙂 I’m so pleased you went on the ride. Birthday or no, I would have… and not cared about what anyone thought except the ones not riding aren’t having as much fun! And I rarely pass a swing without having a go… my sister and I found out the hard way after coffee and breakfast, timing is everything, but it hasn’t daunted us. I would hate my child-self to stop hanging out with me so let her have fun 🙂

    1. I love your comment, EllaDee. Especially the part about the people not riding aren’t having as much fun. I also love, “I would hate my child-self to stop hanging out with me so let her have fun.” That one is one of those wise quotes that says it all in just a few words. Thank you for sharing those wonderful thoughts and for the birthday wishes.

  5. Ha, good for you! Although going to the mall would be the last place I’d want to go on my birthday, a ride on the carousel just might make it worthwhile. Whether I would’ve dared or not remains to be seen, but I suspect if my hubs was onboard with it, I would be too. Like I always say, “These people will never see me again.” Happy belated birthday!

    1. Hey Carrie. I normally wouldn’t choose the mall either, but I needed to get a couple of professional outfits for the writer’s conference this weekend. I hate to shop. But, I made sure we went at opening when very few people were there. I also made sure not to stay too long to where I get frustrated, It turned out to be a nice time, especially at the end. 🙂 Thanks for the belated wishes.
