He’s Back

I heard a familiar song outside my kitchen window, and guess who I found singing to me?(Please excuse quality of photos. They are taken through the window).

Looks like the orange cardinal I named, Zeus has returned. Although, he might really be red. His color could be an effect from the glare of the sun on his breast.

He brought a special someone along with him this year, but she’s way more elusive than him. He sits still and sings while she flutters from branch to branch chirping. Thus, the reason for the blur of her picture.Could it be true that tulip and crocus leaves are peeking through the soil? We still have patches of snow on the ground, but also patches of green grass showing. I was shocked to see those leaves poking out. Any gardeners out there know if this is normal?

Switching gears, here’s an update for anyone who’s wondering about my covid situation. All my symptoms are gone except for one. I find my energy runs out quicker these days. It really knocked the wind out of me, literally. I’ve been trying to build up some more stamina by doing short, easy walks on the treadmill. Simply doing my usual routine of walking or cleaning the house can wipe me out for the rest of the day.

We’re going to have a lot going on in our home in the coming weeks. The updating of our kitchen should begin in about 3 weeks. I’m not looking forward to the work, but I am definitely looking forward to when it’s finished. Crossing fingers it all goes smoothly.

I hope this blog post finds everyone well and getting back to regular life again.

  1. Wow! Lori, the colour of your cardinal has me in awe and it’s a great photo – you should see mine – although you wouldn’t see much of the birds. Nothing so spectacular in our gardens. The red/orange of the cardinal is almost irridescent and I love the other shy bird too. I’m glad you are getting much better and hope that your energy levels return soon. Good luck with your kitchen renovations. It is exciting although nerve-wracking in Covid times. We have changed so much in our house of the years but last year repainted two bedrooms with new carpets and this year the major project has been a new garden writing studio for me in the garden. I’m overjoyed with my own space, so cosy and quiet and concentrating so much better on work! Hooray! Take care and as one who suffered severely from chronic fatigue my saving grace was pacing myself through the days, not overdoing it and gradually building up the mental and phsical stamina. hugs xx

    1. Hi Annika. I thought of you the other day. The lady who helped us with picking out a countertop had the same name as you. It’s such a pretty name, it made me think of you.

      Anyway, your writing studio sounds wonderful. Since the “two-weeks-to-stop-the-spread” a year ago, my husband has been permanently working from home and there is no quiet or privacy in the house. If I lived near you, I might come over and steal it for an hour or two. 😉

  2. Your cardinal couple is gorgeous. Sometimes we have Cardinals here that look orange – the male. I don’t know if it’s the effect of the sun or they’re just orange! May the romance continue throughout the spring. And may your energy increase day by day. 🙏❤️

  4. Cardinals are among my favorite birds. I remember a pair where I used to live. They hung out in the evergreen tree in the back. So I was glad to see a cardinal on my first day in this new apartment. It was ;like he was saying, “Welcome home.”

    1. Sounds like you’re contented in your new apartment with the cardinals welcoming you home, L. They like my feeder so I see them often, but the first time I’ve seen the orange one this winter.

    1. The cardinals have been stopping in on occasion throughout the winter (at our feeder), but they weren’t singing, and I didn’t see the orange one until now. I have a question for you. Someone told me if we move or stop feeding the birds, they’ll starve because they won’t be finding food on their own. Do you know if that’s true?

      1. Well, up to a point, it has some merit. That’s why I slow down with the feeding. I don’t have five feeders going anymore – only two – now that the snow and bitter cold weather is done, and I don’t put out quite as much of the suet either. The birds are finding other places to scrounge for food, but there is still some at the feeders if they are desperate. I agree it would be unfair to stop the feeding “cold turkey.”

        1. Thanks for your thoughts on this, Anneli. We only have one feeder. I live in a suburban community with lots of houses. Not sure if anyone else puts out feeders, but I know none of my immediate neighbors do. This was something I hadn’t thought about before. We had planned to take down the feeder if/when we get another dog, because it’s in the fenced back yard. Now I’m thinking we’ll have to move the feeder to the front yard if/when we get one.

  6. Lovely that they are back! There will be little ones later on. 🙂 The bulbs coming through in March (competing with the last of the snow) isn’t unusual.
    I did a kitchen remodel years ago. It was real messy for a couple of weeks. We ate out a lot and did barbecues, but the result was good. We set up a sort of alternative kitchen in our basement rec room: fridge, toaster oven, microwave, etc.
