Sears, GE and Karma

I’m starting this post with a light-hearted photo to break up the tension you’re about to read. Instead of elf on a shelf, I’ve got a snowman on a shelf. Doesn’t rhyme, but it’s adorable. 😊

I got bit by Karma after my post where I complained about complainers. I’ve now become a complainer myself.

Why Lori, after all that complaining you did about complainers, how in the world did you turn into one of them?

Well, I don’t complain about life in general, because that is what I meant by “complainers.” However, if you read my blog regularly, you’ll remember a little situation I shared about a broken refrigerator.

It’s been twelve days now and the refrigerator is still broken.

Now I’m complaining.

I’ve been longing to have family in my home for a holiday for years. This year it finally happened. I’m having 20 people on Christmas Eve.

I don’t have a refrigerator.

It’s a two year old refrigerator.

We bought and paid for a five year warranty.

We are being told that the part to fix it is unavailable.

Doesn’t that mean they should replace the refrigerator?

Nope.

Taking a deep breath and praying for a comforting angel

We have to wait twenty-one days for them to see if they can magically create the unavailable parts out of thin air. Then if they don’t conjure up the parts with their magic wand, they will replace the refrigerator.

The washing machine we bought from them two years ago hasn’t worked properly from the beginning. Had technicians out here multiple times, and they said their computer shows no errors. They never fixed it. We bought a used washer and dryer to replace them and they actually work. The two-year-old machines with a five-year warranty are sitting unused in our basement.

DON’T BUY GE.

Oh, and it’s no wonder Sears is going out of business. Their five year warranty we paid for is good for nothing. They don’t service their customers.

I’ve thrown stink after stink with these people. Nothing works. They don’t care about their customers. I even called GE and they said they can’t help me either.

  1. Lori, that sucks- you buy the extended warranty so you don’t have issues like this, but apparently that doesn’t work that way anymore. How frustrating. And when did refrigerators become so stinking expensive. It’s ridiculous. I used to love Samsung appliances, but I had an expensive washer and dryer that pissed me off on a regular basis!! I got rid of both of them – now I have GE – I hope these last longer than the Samsung, but now you have me worried!!!

    1. Hi Anneli. That’s exactly what is happening to us, except Sears is still running here, but barely. I just found out later today that they can’t get the parts to fix it because they filed bankruptcy. No one will sell parts to them. So, my husband just ordered the parts himself, and we had to pay for them. Which means our warranty that we paid extra for is no good either. I think they will pay for a repairman to come out once we get the parts . . . I hope.

  6. I’ve had equally bad situations with GE products although it may not be just them. When we built the house we had all top of the line GE appliances except the fridge which I think was Maytag (but don’t quote me on that). The fridge went after 6 years and they said that’s the expected like of a fridge that cost $2K. We had replaced all the appliances well before 10 years, some as soon as 5. The dishwasher had quirks so you had to jiggle to make it work. I was glad to see that go. I remember replacing my mother’s 30 year old refrigerator not because it didn’t work but because it was ugly. Give me ugly back. I don’t know why they don’t give you a new one. Do we really need to legislate a lemon law for appliances?

    1. Boy, can I relate to this, Kate. When we moved into this house 2 years ago, it had all the original appliances from 30 years ago. They were all still working fine but they weren’t updated. IOW, they were ugly! We traded them in for modern, crappy ones. Like you said, I’d rather have ugly. We did save the old refrigerator, which is in our unfinished basement. It will somehow need to be hauled up the stairs for Christmas for when I have my 20 guests. Sigh.

  7. That’s a shame, Lori. Once upon a time, GE made a reliable product. I don’t think anything is built to last these days. We have a 30 year old microwave in our bonus room bar that works like a champ. Our kitchen microwave has been replaced at least every two years. I’m really sorry.

    1. I know what you mean, Jill. This house had all the original appliances from 30 years ago when we moved in (2 years ago). They were all still working fine, but they weren’t updated. So we bought new, obviously crappy ones. We saved the original refrigerator. It’s in our unfinished basement. My husband can’t do certain heavy lifting anymore since his accident, so we’ll have to find someone to get it up the stairs. Sigh.
