Chaos and Calm

Good morning, afternoon or evening, for whichever time you read this post.

I had a brief and serene blog post scheduled for today, but then something happened. . .

My Thanksgiving week started in chaos. So, I’ll tell you about it and then revert to my original post below. My intention is to revert to the calm out of chaos, and hopefully spread some serenity to those who read.

I woke up on Monday morning to a puddle of water under my refrigerator. Come to find out, it went kaput. Yeah, the refrigerator died. Everything inside was melting. I quickly started piling things out to put in our smaller fridge in the (unfinished) basement. When I got down there, I pulled on a light string to see my way around, and the entire fixture came down. It almost knocked me in the head.

I do have to pre-make some foods for Thanksgiving, and I don’t know if I’ll have enough room in our small, downstairs refrigerator. I’ll have to figure something out.

I called the service technicians to come out for repair before Thanksgiving, but they didn’t have anyone available until Friday. I made a stink about it, and they scheduled me for Wednesday morning. I had an important doctor appointment for that time, but I had to cancel. Wednesday is still not soon enough for repairs, but it’ll have to do. Who knows if they’ll even be able to fix it that day. They may have to order a part. What can you do? 🤷‍♀️ Gotta go with the flow.

On the bright side: 1) Thankfully we do have a refrigerator in the basement, even though it’s so stuffed now that things may fall out when we open it. 2) I was fortunate not to get knocked out by that light fixture, and it didn’t fall all the way to the ground. 3) We have a warranty on the fridge (since it’s NEW) so the service call should be free.

As Frank Costanza (from Seinfeld) used to say, Serenity now.

On that note, I transition you to a time of peace and calm. My original post is below. The words are meant to bring on serenity.

Be still and know . . .

When we are immersed in the sound of silence, we are immersed in oneness. We become one in mind and heart, one with nature, one with the Universe.

This is what I love about the sound of falling snow.

The silence.

On one day I looked out my window to a boring back yard with worn out wood fences.

The next day I looked out my window and saw a work of art.

The absorption of sound to silence.

The floating, flickering flakes.

The glistening, fluffiness.

The unique way nature’s precipitation accumulates into magical displays.

Where furry friends like to play.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING.

Have you ever had things suddenly go awry at the most inopportune time?

  1. I hope everything worked out Lori. Don’t forget that you can use the outdoors as a refrigerator if you have a cooler or other way of securing the food but hopefully that move wasn’t necessary. 🙂
Glad you found some delight in the snow. Your poochie seems very happy with it. 🙂

  2. These things always happen at the worst time. When my son was a baby, he and I both got the Norovirus. He puked on EVERYTHING and then the washing machine broke. I was then very thankful that my mother-in-law lives nearby. She drove over, collected all my pukey washing and returned it to me clean, dry and folded.

    1. Oh yuck, getting sick and having to take care of a sick child is tough enough, then your machine broke. How nice to have your MIL return fresh clean clothes. That must’ve been a huge relief. I keep reminding myself that other people get through these tough times and so can I. Thanks for stopping by, Abbi.

  3. LOVE your photos, Lori!!!
I hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving despite that refrigerator mishap. This past weekend, I headed out to my car only to discover that it was totally dead. Two people tried to jump-start it. Nothing. Finally discovered the culprit–a dead battery!

    1. Oh no. Not a dead battery. Ack. I hope everything worked out and you were able to get it taken care of. I’m a little ways from you, but if you’re ever stranded, shoot me an email (I can always .

Yeah, the dead refrigerator is a continuing saga. They need to order a part and have no idea when it’s going to get here. I’m having 20 people for Christmas and if it’s not fixed by then I’m going to be fuming.

That pretty snow over the weekend happened just before our refrigerator died. I love capturing its displays.

      Happy Thanksgiving, Miss L.

  4. Oh MY Lori! You certainly DID have quite a Monday. Makes mine feel a bit better… And, yes, have had many inopportune things go awry. Good thing you have a frig in the basement. We have one, too, so when ours went south a couple years ago we had to do the same thing as you. By the way, love your magical pictures. You did capture some works of art!

    1. Thank you for the nice compliment of my photos, Kathy. I had drafted the blog with those “works of art” before the chaos, and then the silent-oneness sort of went to pieces with the fridge issue. Snow is about melted now.

Glad you got that dark chocolate bar. Sometimes nothing else will do. 😉

    1. Hi Andrea. I had that post with the snow images drafted over the weekend before the chaos. The snow is almost melted now. But, I figure I can’t do much more about the refrigerator so I might as well post it and revert to the calm.

Thanks for the thoughtful comment, Andrea.

  5. Oh boy, when the refrigerator breaks down, all heck breaks loose! It’s happened several times at our house, usually just after I’ve shopped and loaded it up. Glad you have a back-up! Happy Thanksgiving!

    1. Hi Book Club Mom. So true, all heck does break loose with a broken fridge. Ack. Of course it would happen right after you load it up or at Thanksgiving, right? Thanks so much for stopping by and for the nice comment. Have a Happy one. 🙂

  6. My friends refrigerator went out completely (deader than a doornail) about 2 weeks ago. Maybe November is refrigerator month! Glad you were able to get someone. She had to get someone to deliver right away which didn’t happen. Her son-in-laws got it in a pick-up truck and installed it although the ice maker didn’t work. Fortunately that’s not a deal breaker and can wait until after the holiday. Have a great holiday and I hope you find a place to store your food!

    1. Boy, another dead fridge! Yeah, perfect timing, right? Still sitting here with a broken fridge today. Repairman is coming tomorrow, but I don’t have high hopes for a repair on the same day. 😛

Thanks for the nice comment, Kate. Enjoy the holiday. 🙂

    1. Hi Jill. I drafted that original more peaceful post over the weekend before the chaos. The snow is mostly melted now, but I’m trying to get back into that calmer frame of mind. It’s hard on my pain issues climbing up and down the stairs for things out of the fridge, but at least I’m getting exercise. 😛

Thank you for the nice comment. I’ve been thinking of you and keeping you in my prayers.

  7. I’m sorry, but I had to laugh (a little bit). What could go wrong? It sounds like one of those days when you should have stayed in bed. But it’s only a small moment in a big life, so I’m glad you were able to look beyond it to the “artwork” in your backyard. So beautiful! Happy Thanksgiving, Lori. We do have much to be thankful for.

    1. Hi Anneli. Yes, it definitely was a comedy of errors. Still sitting here with a broken refrigerator. Repairman comes tomorrow, but I don’t have high hopes. Climbing up and down the stairs for stuff out of the fridge is hard on my pain issues, but at least I’m getting exercise. 😛

I drafted the post of my “artwork” back yard over the weekend, before the chaos happened. The snow is mostly melted now, but I’m trying to get back into that calm.

Thanks for he nice comment. 🙂

        1. When I was telling my mom what happened we laughed. It’s even more comical when I go downstairs to get something from the fridge and then realize I forgot something. I go back down to get it and realize I forgot something else. 😛
