The Ritual Cure

So, I had a different post scheduled for today, but changed my mind. The post I wanted to put up was much cheerier, and I’m not in a cheery mood. Yeah, I’m crabby today. Have I scared you off yet?

I’m writing this on the fly, so pardon any mistakes. You see, I woke up with a cold this morning. I know, just deal with it, because everybody gets colds. But nope, not me. I did get the flu two years ago, but before that, I hadn’t had a cold in five years. You can imagine what a wuss I am if I do catch the rare bug. This is not to say that I don’t have other health issues. I struggle with pain every day, and an additional cold just adds to the uncomfortable heaviness of this body I’m carrying around.

I can usually tell if a cold is coming on by the sore throat and tiredness that precedes the other symptoms. This time that did not happen. Yesterday afternoon I was sneezing quite a bit, but didn’t feel sick, so I attributed it to allergies. I took an allergy pill, and it only made a teensy improvement in the tickly nose. Still, I figured I just needed a stronger dose (but didn’t take one).

In the middle of the night last night was when the symptoms of a cold hit me. No sore throat, but I couldn’t breathe and my head ached. Still experiencing those symptoms now, plus a tired, dragging body. I ache all over, but I can’t tell if that is the usual pain or from the cold. Good news is, I don’t have a fever, so hopefully this is just a quick in-and-out virus. I have a busy week next week, so it better be gone by then.

I’m not looking for sympathy. I’m just surprised, because I didn’t have any clue this was coming on, and I’m not my usual self. So, enough of my complaining. On the bright side, I have the food in the house that Mom used to make for me when I got sick. I’ll be off to slurp on pastina, and do my favorite thing when resting up due to a cold . . . watch the old Dick Van Dyke Show with Mary Tyler Moore. It makes me laugh, and you know what they say about laughter. Pastina and Dick Van Dyke are the cure for what ails me.

If I didn’t scare you off, thanks for reading this through. Now, how about you? Do you have anything to complain about today? Can you tell when a cold is coming on? If so, what are your symptoms? Do you have a ritual that helps you through?

  1. Lori, I hope you’re much better now! So many colds seem to be going round this summer … unusually so. I used to suffer terribly from sinusitis and tracheitis – not fun. I used to drink honey with hot water by the gallon – until I can’t stand it nowadays!

    1. Hi Annika, I can understand not being able to stand the honey & water after so much use. I just have a little of cold remnants leftover, so I’m almost there. Thanks for the nice comment. 🙂

    1. Hi Laura. I have remnants of the cold left, but getting better. I’ll bet that “cammy teh” felt comforting from your Granma. Thanks for sharing and your good wishes.

    1. Hi Jacqui. Yeah, I’m definitely being a whiney baby about this. My stuffy nose decided to descend into my bronchial and have tickle-fest in my throat. Urgh. Thank you for coming over for a visit. Have a great weekend.

  2. I hope you feel better soon.
I’ve been under the weather myself. Not so much cold but stomach issues. Hoping that will go away soon.
    I need more vitamin C!

    1. Oh no, I hope your tummy issues get better soon. It might help if we could get a little sunshine, eh? Thanks for the feel-better wishes. ❤

  3. Even though I’m on a biologic drug that weakens my immune system, I haven’t had a cold or the flu in years. Of course, I’m knocking on wood right now. 🙂 I do get horrible sinus headaches from changes in the barometric pressure. Anneli’s salt water remedy is the best. Feel better!

    1. I get those sinus headaches on occasion, too, Jill. Glad you’re staying away from the virus bugs. Keep on the healthy path and thanks for the feel-better wishes.

  4. Funny you should say that, because I have a rip-roaring cold going on right now. I’m into day 4, and my sleep has been horrible. Guess I joked one too many times about having the immune system of a goddess. Karma has come back and infected me. 😄

    Hope you feel better soon!

    1. Oh no, not you, too. Ack. I know, right? I rarely get sick either. Maybe it hits us harder because it doesn’t happen so often? I don’t know, but I hope you’re feeling better soon, too. Take care of yourself.

  5. I don’t usually get colds or flu very often but this year has been awful. A monster cold in November that then turned into an ear infection; a monster flu in January that then turned into pneumonia. I’ve also had a series of more minor aliments that have been really irritating. I often don’t get clues that they’re coming – I usually just wake up with them.

I hope you feel better soon Lori. 🙂 Colds are never any fun but colds at this time of the year are somehow worse.

    1. Oh, yuck. Sounds like you had a bad bout of back-to-back sicknesses. I rarely get sick either, so maybe when we do get sick, it hits us worse than usual. Thanks for sharing and for your well wishes, Lynette.

  6. At the first hint of a sore throat or a sniffle, I do the NeilMed sinus rinse and almost every time, the cold does not get a grip.I do it morning and night for a day or two just to be sure the bugs are gone and I’m fine. If you can’t get the pre-made sinus mix at Costco or your pharmacy, you can mix a quarter tsp. salt in a cup of warm water and put it in a squirt bottle to flush out your sinuses. It sounds gross, but it is so worth it. Germs don’t like to live in a salty environment.

    1. My mother liked the warm saltwater snuffed through the nose remedy, too, but I can’t say that I liked it. I prefer a hot toddy: hot tea with lemon, honey, a shot of rum and a cinnamon stick. A much more pleasant remedy, and it really can help.

      1. Ooh, rum. Thanks for that tip, Ann. I’m drinking tea already. I’ll have to see if I have some rum in the house. 🙂

    2. I usually pop a ton of vitamins (Airborne) when I feel a cold coming on, but I had no clue about this one until it hit. I can’t use the sinus rinse because of the way my septum is shaped. I do have a saline nasal spray though, and I thank you for reminding me. I used it right after I read your comment. I’ll continue to do so. Thanks, Anneli.
