Heartwarming Humanity

I don’t even know where to begin with this blog post, because there is so much running through my mind that I could say.

I have several online friends who I would love to get to know in-person if we lived near each other. Most reading my blog I met through WordPress.

I met one woman in particular on an author’s facebook page. I posted something there and got some unsupportive and snarky comments. Paula was the only one who gave me a kind and supportive response. I read a few of her posts on that fb page and was drawn to her. So, I asked for her friendship and promptly left that author page.

At first, I thought Paula and I were alike in both our writing styles and our personalities (outgoing, like humor, writing filled with emotion). But, the more I got to know her, I realized I’m nothing like her. She has courage and grace beyond what I could even imagine for myself.

I’m not proud of it, but I’m a worrier. I also get turned all topsy-turvy if anything in my routine gets thrown off. Even something minor. In other words, I’m not good with disorganization, let alone upheaval or chaos. Paula’s entire world has been uprooted, and I’m amazed at her grace and humor.

Her latest blog post has the type of human interaction stories that move the soul. Please do read it. The below clip is only one example from her post of something beautiful happening around her, in the midst of upheaval. It’ll give you inspiration and hope for humanity.

After my second chemo infusion, I stopped at a store on the way home to look for a top that allowed easy access to my port. As I pawed through the racks, an older woman moved beside me, to begin her own search. I think I made some offhanded comment about not being able to find things that don’t look they should be worn by somebody fifteen years old. She laughed and then handed me the most beautiful blouse.

“Here,” she said, “This suits you.”
I looked at the price tag. It was on sale. Crazy cheap. ”Wow,” I said. “It’s amazing. Thanks.”
“Would you like for me to pray for you?” she asked.

I nodded, trying to process how she could know that it is exactly what I needed….more than the blouse.

  1. This is a beautiful post to Paula. I also found her online while searching cancer sites. We share a bond with cancer. She has been an inspiration to me with her beautiful smile and positive attitude. We are new friends developing a special online friendship. I look forward to our continuing connection. I have read her wonderful books and highly suggest all of them. Her books are wonderful, full of characters that she brings alive and into your life.

    1. Hi Vicki. Thanks so much for stopping by to read it. I had to share Paula’s post about strangers who seemed to instinctively want to help. I love that Paula is sharing her story and inspiring others. Blessings to you.

    1. Hi Carrie. I find it cool how we find just the right people online. I also found it absolutely fascinating that these strangers that Paula bumped into seemed to know instinctively that she was sick. Whether one believes or not, to have strangers in public offering her support warmed my heart. Thanks for reading.

    1. Hi Jill. Whether one believes or not, it fascinated me how so many strangers appeared to know instinctively that she needed support. Very cool that they stopped to pray for her. Warmed my heart, anyway. Thanks for reading.

  2. My goodness, Lori, you give me far too much credit. Trust me when I tell you that I find myself worrying at 3.a.m. or feeling sorry for myself when I look at my bald head. But thankfully, those moments are fleeting, more like a whisper in the wind than a full-fledged hurricane. I used to roll my eyes when people would say that God doesn’t give you more than you can handle. And sometimes, I still do. But I have learned that most often He steps in to hold your hand and love you through it. They call that grace, and I am mighty blessed to have experienced it. Thank you, my friend, for your support…. and kindness.

    1. Hi Paula. Waking up at 3am with self-pity or worry is natural in your case. I know you don’t dwell, and you still make me chuckle on occasion. As for me, I’m neurotic. Hehe.

I do not like the “God doesn’t give you more than you can handle,” phrase. Nope. Won’t find me saying it.

I just found it so fascinating that so many strangers have stopped to pray for you. I mean, how do they know? I’ve seen photos, and you certainly look well. I told my husband this story and he said that maybe they can see angels or a light around you or something. I saw angels around myself once, after an accident.

      Still praying for you. ❤

      1. Maybe its the “pray for me t-shirt” I wear when I shop. 🙂 Who knows? I continue to be amazed at the miraculous way the Lord works His magic. And I am convinced that we encounter angels more often than we realize. Kind of makes you want to be on your best behavior, right?
