My memory escapes me
Have we met before
Your striking beauty dazzles me
And it feels like the first time
Radiant rustic reds
Yarning yokes of yellow
Greatly glowing golds
Outstanding oranges
October air caresses my skin
And refreshes my flaming lungs
Gray skies reminiscent
Of hazy Halloweens
Vague memories come forward
This must’ve happened before
All those many years ago
A born again autumn virgin.
by Lori (L. Virelli, experiencing first autumn in a quarter of a century)
We’re a mix of color and green, but I think the dry summer put a damper on the showiness here. Still, I’m glad for the cooler temperatures! Enjoy autumn back in the Midwest, and hopefully this winter for you will be one more along the lines of “dipping your toe in the water” rather than an arctic wasteland. 🙂

Yes, I’m hoping the winter doesn’t blast me on my first year back. Maybe you’ll get more color yet, JM.

What a marvelous experience, to experience something as if it were new. Autumn is my favorite season, so it would b the one I’d choose.

Thanks, EllaDee. In fall, the display of colors make up for the chill. Do you get much snow where you live? That’s coming soon for me too.

Not snow much snow on the east coast of Australia, mainly in high country NSW & Victoria and occasionally other high/surrounding areas. I’ve seen snow once!

I had not idea about Australia. Thanks for sharing it. It’s been an awful long time since I’ve seen snow. It’s going to be frigid, but the first snow will at least be exciting for me. After that, I’ll probably be wishing it was summer again. 😉

So beautiful, thanks for sharing! Did you hear about the guy who is actually selling fall leaves for $19.95? http://shipfoliage.com/

No, I hadn’t heard about this, Joy. I guess it’s a good idea to make money. I wonder if he gets many buyers. Years ago, I had a sister-in-law send me foliage down in Florida. She had shrink wrapped it in plastic to preserve it. I wonder what I did with those? I had saved so many other keepsakes. I’m thinking it eventually went bad, because I seem to remember the plastic eventually splitting apart. But, it was nice of her to think of me, knowing I missed autumn.
Thanks for sharing that link, Joy.

Beautiful poem. The beauty of autumn does feel as if it is the first time one is seeing it, even though it is a precursor of chilly days of winter.

Hi Miss Z. Like you, I’ve made it back to my hometown in the Midwest (U.S.) from Florida. I’m seeing autumn for the first time in 27 years, so it’s like seeing through new eyes. I live here permanently now. I’m savoring one season at a time. Thanks for stopping by.

Hi Lori, how exciting to experience a real Autumn for the first time in so long. Halloween will be great this year because of the scuttling of dried leaves on the paths and a cool wind blowing. No palm trees and balmy Fall evenings this year!!!! Then it will be time to hibernate as the Midwest winters move in. Are you mentally prepared for it? Hope you and your family (including your four-legged family member) are doing well!!!!!!
PS. Loved the photos and the poem!!!!!!!

Hi SD. We are definitely enjoying the fall. Haven’t wanted to think too far ahead to winter yet, but I did just buy my first pair of snow boots in a quarter of a century. Heh. We are doing okay, considering. You may have missed the post about the loss of my husband’s dad. It wasn’t unexpected, but still sad to lose a parent. Hope you and your family are doing well, too. Thanks for the nice comment.

Snow boots – cool. And you can buy hats and scarves and scrumptious cozy stuff like that. I am almost jealous. Haven’t worn a winter coat in about 13 years. Nothing better than coming into a warm, cozy house after being out in the cold, and snow. Stomping your snow boots and putting on cozy slippers. I miss that!

It will be like a new experience for me, SD, after 27 years. I already had a winter coat, gloves and hats for a visit many years ago to my brothers wedding (12? 13 years?). You’ve got me picturing the scene already with your words. Come on in for a winter visit some time.

Would love to. My old stomping grounds are on the South Side – Hyde Park – where the University of Chicago is located. We walked everywhere as kids, in the snow and the bitter cold wind that blew off the lake, bundled up in layers and layers of coats and sweaters, we were like roly-polys with all those layers on. Had a great time!!!!!

Oh wow. I didn’t realize you lived here as a kid. That’s when it’s more fun. As an adult having to drive in snow makes it less inviting. I’m not anywhere near Hyde Park, but it’s about an hour’s drive (45 miles?).

Back when I was kid, everyone – even the taxicab drivers were scared to drive to Hyde Park (being on the South Side). Perhaps it is a bit more sedate now. Used to spend all of our allowance and babysitting money on Michigan Avenue, and at the Water Tower shopping center. Those were the days!!!!! When Marshall Fields was really Marshall Fields and we had Bergdorfs, I.Magnin and Saks. And the Museum of Science and Industry admission was free.

I remember those days, too … the good old days. I used to hear bad things about the south side, and it’s gotten worse (don’t know about Hyde Park though). As a teenager, we used to drive down to Oak Street Beach or hang out at Water Tower Place. Good times. 🙂 (Maybe we passed it each other on the street)

Thank you, Carrie. It’s not all happening at once either. Some trees are turning color, some are green and some are bare. I don’t remember that, and it’s like a new experience to me.

Ours have just started turning this past week. I look forward to the next month. NE Ohio is beautiful in the fall. Winters, on the other hand, not so much…

Don’t even want to think of winter yet, although that first snow in all these years might be exciting, depending if it’s light or heavy. 😉 Our leaves turned while my husband was away when his father died. He came back to full color. Enjoy those colors as they come, Carrie, and don’t think too far ahead so it doesn’t take away from the moment.

Beautiful photos, Lori. It’s so important to capture the foliage on film, as one windy day can take it away. We’re still green here in Charlotte, but I’ve got my camera ready.

So true, Jill. It was windy yesterday, and several trees around here are now almost bare. At the same time, there are still trees that are green. It isn’t happening all at once, which I don’t remember. It’s like I’ve never seen fall before. I’m enjoying it. Thank you for stopping by.
