It’s a Bug’s World

lilacbush (800x430) wmI got to smell my favorite flowers for the first time in twenty-seven years. Lilacs. We moved back north just in time for the colorful spring.

iris2 (450x800) wmWe are still unpacking after our one way trip out of Florida to Illinois. The weather has been near perfect (for me) since we arrived. Oh sure, we’ve had some days of rain, but when the sun comes back out, there is no steam rising from the streets afterward, like back in Florida. The temperature goes from 85 to 55 and back again from day to day, and I’m grateful I’m not dealing with relentless, humid 90’s.

I heard about the harsh winters they’ve had here for the past couple of years. You’d think that with such a frozen tundra, there would be less bugs in spring, but nope. It’s as bad as the infestations in Florida. Weren’t these hideous, tiny creatures killed from the frigid winter? We find them in the house and swarming us on our evening walks with the dog. Why can’t I escape them?

We’ve been driving with the car windows open (when it isn’t raining, of course). One day as we drove around town with the pleasant breeze in my hair, something dropped into the car and landed on my shoulder. Since I was behind the wheel, I didn’t look, but I figured it was a leaf and brushed it off. A couple minutes later, something tickled my chest.

Eeek! A CrEePy-CrAwLy!

I pulled to the side of the road in front of someone’s home. I wriggled and writhed around. The creepy-crawly flung onto my purse. I thrust open the door and threw my bag to the ground beside the car. The fat bodied spider-like, speckled insect hopped off onto the pavement and scurried away. Ack!

Sometimes I think bugs are going to take over the world.

lilacs1 (800x449) wmAhh, the scent of fresh lilacs

Aside from the insects, we’ve had both ups and downs throughout this cross-country move. After 27 years in one home, I’m finding myself in a physical and mental adjustment period.

As my first beloved dog taught me, it’s all about the journey.

Mom was gracious enough to put up with us for three weeks at her house (thank you Mom), until we found a townhouse to rent. Now, we can take our time to find a permanent place to buy.

The unpacking seems endless, and I can’t find where I put anything. I’ll be blogging and reading blogs intermittently. I can’t wait to share the latest notorious happening from my old neighborhood.

Are the bugs bad where you live? Have you found it hard to adjust after a move? Have you lived in one place as long as me, or have you moved a lot?

P.S. Since I first drafted this blog, we’ve been inundated with rain, rain and more rain.

P.S.S. Husband’s new job is working out so much better for his health and well being.

  1. I’m so glad to hear that things are going well up there. (Well besides the rain and the bugs). Lilacs are a definite perk of being up north. 🙂

  2. The bugs seem to be making things miserable everywhere. We have these super-annoying gnats that drive me crazy when I try to do yard work. But it’s good to hear that you’re getting settled in again. I hope you find the perfect house soon!

    1. Hey JM. We did find a place to rent and are trying to get settled now. Just when we think things are calming down, we realize there is more to do. Sigh. I know about those gnats. We used to have swarms of them follow us in Florida as we walked the dog. Here’s to being bug free. Thanks for your support.

  3. Congrats on the move! I lived in Texas for several years, and the bugs there were as legendary as the locals claimed. I remember battling a giant flying roach in my apartment that flew right at my face. Unfortunately, I have not seen a dropoff in size/amount here in Georgia. I think the mosquitoes here may be worse. Also dealt with grasshopper invasion in New Mexico, really wild!

  4. Woo hoo… you’re there. Bugs, unpacking rain or shine, I’m pleased to hear this. I recently blogged about ‘slow progress’ coming to the conclusion it’s better than no progress at all! Although sometimes dealing with the details can be a bit humdrum, these are wonderful times for you 🙂

    1. Thank you for those wise words, EllaDee. You’re right, slow progress is better than no progress. I appreciate your support and for sticking with me. 🙂

  5. I enjoyed reading this post and I’m with you about bugs. I can stand to look at them but can’t stand them on me. Now about your move. I can’t relate to a move AT ALL. I’ve lived in the same house since 1963 when I married my first and only husband. 🙂 I’m not sure anyone could budge me from my home. I detest changes. I was born, raised and have lived in the same county my entire life. Folks think my life has been boring but I don’t feel there is anything missing. 🙂

    1. Hi Yvonne. I was checking out your blog. Sounds like you have a happy life right where you are. No need to fix something that isn’t broken (no need for you to change). I’ve only lived two places. I moved back to my hometown after 27 years away, and even though I’m from here, I’m still finding it an adjustment after so many years away. Thank you for checking out my blog and commenting.

  6. I’m happy to see you’re settling in and that your husband’s job is a better fit, Lori. Well, I suppose every area has good and bad. You’ll get used to the bugs. At least you don’t have to deal with scorpions!

  7. I am so glad to hear from you!!!! I am happy that you are finally getting settled. Bet it is nice to see lilac again. Wish you could send us some rain, seems like you have had enough for a while.
As far as packing and unpacking – we were in the military, can pack and unpack a house in about 2 days. Just lots of practice moving every 2-3 years.

    1. Thanks so much, SD. Those lilacs were heaven when I first arrived.

Oh wow, military. I can’t imagine moving so many times. I’m grateful for you military families and all you go through. God Bless.

  8. Thanks for the update. Lovely to hear from you! And I’m with you on the bugs–definitely not my thing. Luckily the mosquitoes in Ohio are less of a problem than they were in my home state of North Dakota. So thick there in the summer.

Glad your hub’s job is working out. That’s great to hear.
