The Love of Things

The original blog I scheduled for today is below. But, first, I felt the need to talk about my eerie morning. Soon after I woke up, I took the dog for a walk. I’ve been hearing about this polar vortex hitting the U.S., and it’s even supposed make it down here to Florida. Of course, we’re closer to the equator, so we won’t see negative numbers, or even single digits. It’s supposed to hit here later in the day, so I woke up to mild, damp temps. Except, a foggy, quiet stillness filled the air. Something felt creepy about it. Maybe it’s all the news reports of impending doom from this global warming ice-over. It’s strange how my air-conditioning is on right now, and my heat will be on by dinner time.

Onto my original blog about the new year.

2013 cell (400x234)Despite that my  husband lost his job in January of 2013, it was a very good year for me (us). He started his new job in March, and although it has longer hours and less pay, we’ve still been quite content. Luckily, I’m the kind of person who doesn’t like bills, so we were already downsized before the cut. I don’t pay a monthly fee for a cell phone. Track phones cost as little as $18 a month when you spread the flat fee out for the year. Sure, I don’t have the ability to play games or get on the internet wherever I go, but it’s not that important to me. I can text and talk.

Why am I talking to you about finances? I have no idea. I digressed. But, it does sort of tie-in to my point here. I found that “things” are not what matter. I was happier in 2013 because I was healthier. I did have some minor flare-ups of conditions, but nothing set me back like in the years 2010, 2011 and 2012. My point being, it doesn’t matter how much stuff we have, or that we can get whatever we demand with the click of finger on a cell phone. What matters to me is to feel strong, healthy and spend quality time with people IN PERSON (which happens to include my dog-person).

maxnme wmIn 2013, I spent more time with people I care about. Family members actually visited my home for holidays this year, which hasn’t happened in the past.

tnks dinner wmNot to mention I accomplished a very important goal … I finished my novel.

So, I had a bit of a difficult time saying goodbye to 2013. It treated me well. However, I said a very powerful prayer affirmation for 2014. I’m optimistic for this year. I’m feeling well and I look forward to getting an editor for my book. Perhaps some new and exciting things are on the horizon. Some long awaited wishes may be granted this year … maybe even publication.

May “things” be set aside for everyone to discover joy in good health, family, friends and being there for one another.

  1. The weather has definitely been weird all over the country. I know you’ll welcome cooler temps!

I’m so glad that 2013 was good to you. You learned a lesson that I think is difficult for so many to figure out… Money doesn’t buy happiness. I hope that 2014 brings you more of what you love – time with family, opportunities to write, and the love of your dog-person!

  2. Things. Things. Things. I have been digging out around here and getting rid of THINGS. Sure, I have 6 cute parfait glasses. I’ve never used them in the 20 years they have been in my cupboard. Out they go! Three sets of double-bed sheets and no double-bed. Out they go! You get the idea.

    1. Maybe you could fly out to FL and get rid of things for my mother-in-law. She’d find an excuse to keep those parfait glasses. Heh. Thanks for stopping by, Robin, and for the congrats on my novel.

    1. LOL. A vortex sounds like something in a fantasy story that shifts people from dimension to dimension. The media is surely creative with its language these days. ;-P

  3. The older I get the more I appreciate my friends and family (as well as Thurber, the family dog). I much prefer doing things with the people in my life than accumulating things. When I was a child my parents gave me many terrific toys, but my most treasured memories are centered around activities that relied on imagination. For example, there was the discarded 5 iron my dad found along with a few golf balls that he gave to my brother and me. Even though we knew next to nothing about the game of golf aside from the fact it’s spelled with an f and not a p-h, my brother redesigned the layout of much of our family home to double as a putting green. The bathroom was the equivalent of the sand trap. We’d fire that ball down stairs, across hallways, in and out of bedrooms for days on end. We had a blast. I’ll spare you the tale about how we played touch football with pillows, but you likely get my point. Enjoy the warmth of FLA. I’ll be freezing in NYC.

    1. Hey there Miss V. I love the story of playing golf indoors. Sounds like fun with your brother. We’re not so warm in Florida today. Your north winds are keeping it in the 40’s here. I’m enjoying it, because it’s still much warmer than up north. It only lasts a couple of days here anyway. By Friday it’ll be 80 again in FL. Thanks for sharing your experience with enjoying fun times without “things.”

  4. Funny, we both ended up talking a bit about finances here in the New Year. I wish you the best in 2014, Lori. I hope it will be even better than 2013. But, most important, may it be enough. Blessings!

    1. My mom taught me the saying, “May the best of last year be the worst of this year.” And, I wish that for you. Thanks for your support, Ms. Kathy.

  5. I agree–the older I get, the less material things mean. In fact, things merely become clutter. One more thing to get rid of. My husband and I are slowly trying to rid ourselves of things we’ve accumulated. It will be easier when the kids are gone, but I’m in no rush for that. 🙂

Best of luck to you in 2014 and with your new book!

    1. So true, Carrie. Things do become clutter. Thanks for the good wishes. I’m going to be looking for an editor soon and may contact some of my author friends for recommends.

  6. You are so right about good health and spending quality time with others. Hopefully your message will inspire others. Here’s to a good 2014! (BTW, it’s supposed to be 6 degrees for a low in Atlanta tonight, with wind chills below zero!)

    1. Wow! For Atlanta, that’s really cold. It’s supposed to be around 45 degrees for a high here, 30’s overnight. Also, cold for Florida’s standards. Thank you so much for reading, and your nice comment, Joy.
