What Makes You Smile?

Today I’m continuing with my happiness theme from Friday.

For a few months now I’ve been wanting to write a blog about what makes us smile. I don’t mean a quick smile to someone on the street, or even a hearty laugh, but the kind where you feel joy right down to your core.

I’m going to share something that makes me smile in this blog post. Would love to read what makes you smile as well. Let’s spread the happiness.

There is one song that always makes me smile down to my very core, no matter what kind of mood I’m in. Even during a time of grieving when I couldn’t bring a smile to my face, this song made me feel a tiny bit of a smile on the inside. The song has some sort of an energy boost I cannot explain. At least it does for me.

I don’t know why, but every once in a while when I’m feeling down, I want to stay in my misery. I don’t want anyone to try and make me smile, I just want to be left alone. If I’m in that leave-me-alone-I-deserve-to-be-pissy kind of mood, I won’t listen to this song because it will cheer me up.

Below are the lyrics to the song, and  hopefully the video will imbed. Both the melody and the lyrics together are how it works so well. Check it out, maybe it’ll lift your spirits, or maybe it just won’t be your cup of tea. You never know.

Strange Cup of Tea by Sister Hazel
Sometimes I wake with a weary head
And I wonder how I’ll ever get through
Then I think of the things you said
How you told me to myself be true

My faith in things unseen
My belief that it will all work out
May seem like a strange cup of tea
but if it’s all right with you, then it’s all right with me

Chorus: On my feet I walk, with my legs I run
In my arms I’ll hold another day
With my head I think, from my heart I sing
With my hands to my face, I pray

There are times I feel with the strains of life
I could just turn around, turn around and walk away
Then a strength like a beam from above
Lifts me up by the hand and it leads me to say

Good things for good people, you see
Good things, they seem to all work out
May seem like a strange cup of tea
But if it’s all right with you, then it’s all right with me

Chorus

Getting by ain’t enough for me
I know what I like, I like what I see
I’m not only flesh and blood
but I’m heart and soul, I know

Sometimes I feel at the end of the day
Was it all worth while or have I settled for less?
I sit back and you’re there by my side
Sincerely you say, “we’re both so blessed”

Count your blessings, count them one, two, three
Don’t give up cause it will all work out
May seem like a strange cup of tea but
If it’s all right with you, it’s just fine with me

Chorus

  4. Lori, this is a great post! I’ll take you up on your offer and, on Friday, I’ll do a “what makes us smile” post and link back to your post. It’s so very important to remember what makes us smile! Also, there are times when we need to heal our pain; and the only way to heal it is to feel it. So, we need not force a smile or try to artificially alter those unpleasant moods, if we understand that the pain is trying to tell us something within us needs to heal. Have a beautiful week, Lovely! Sloan

    1. Yes, we have to acknowledge all of our emotions. Sometimes though, I can dwell too much on negativity. And, since I can’t change the fact that I’m going to be in sweltering humidity for the next four months, I might as well try to change my attitude and focus on things that make me smile. Look forward to your smiling blog post, Sloan.

        1. Heya Pete. I just mentioned to Sloan that yes, we must acknowledge all of our emotions. Sometimes though, I can dwell too much on negativity. And, since I can’t change the fact that I’m going to be in sweltering humidity for the next four months, I might as well try to change my attitude and focus on things that make me smile. I wrote about the heat already in a poem, so I’m hitting on all emotions at some point. 😛 If you get a minute, check out the poem.
