Gethsemane

Every Easter weekend I usually find time to watch my favorite musical Jesus Christ Superstar (JCS).

I’m generally not a musical kind a gal, although I’ve enjoyed a few (Dreamgirls and Wicked come to mind). I love JCS because it’s rock music and takes a look at the Passion of Christ from a different perspective (through the eyes of Judas & Jesus/Y’eshua). I’ve always loved Ted Neely and Carl Anderson in those parts, but I found a man who played in the London stage version in the 90’s. I don’t know who played Judas in it, but indulge me being female for a moment … the man who played Jesus is one fine specimen, with a voice like an angel.

Since this is the weekend of the passion, I just had to share this version of Gethsemane by the man who played Jesus in JCS on the London stage … Steve Balsamo. (Hang on past the ad and at least stick it out to between 3 & 4 minutes. It’s worth it.)

Happy Easter to everyone. May you all discover your eternal fountain of youth.

  1. It’s so many years since I saw this show .. in the late 80’s.- it’s now showing in Stockholm again. Great show. I loved “Wicked” … but my favorite musical, Cats. You’re so right in saying “hang on to the past” = memories, without memories .. what would we be?????

  2. I LOVE JCS. I was lucky enough to see the original Broadway version in the early 1970s. Also, my first date with my husband 10 years later was to a production at his university. The music is fantastic. I know almost all the lyrics. “I Don’t Know How to Love Him” is a show stopper.

    1. How cool that you saw the original. I saw the two originals from the movie on stage (Ted & Carl/Jesus & Judas). I saw Ted play Jesus even into his 60’s, and he still sounded great (seen it live several times). Love this guy Steve Balsamo, but even he’s getting too old to play Jesus now. That’s pretty cool that you had your first date seeing the play with your husband. Have a great Easter weekend, Robin

      1. My uncles asked my mom if it was okay to take me to the B-way production because it was controversial when it came out . . . Jesus, rock and roll music? Blasphemy! She didn’t have a problem at all. (She is a music-lover.) There were two nun in the standing room only section. For some reason, that made me giggle and the memory stuck with me.

        1. Controversial, and they showed the movie to us at our public high school as a lesson. We were supposed to compare Jesus to the rise and fall of a rock star. Yeah, right. I guess our educators thought they were modern and flowing with the times. Either that, or it was their way of sneaking in a Christian agenda. Heh. I don’t think people took as offense to it as the media was making of it. Not even those nuns you saw at the play.

    1. HA! Thanks, I needed that laugh. Having a bit of a hard day. Hey,don’t think it didn’t happen where my MIL brought her own meal for everyone to my house when I had a meal cooked for everyone already (like Deb at Thanksgiving). The only difference between Debra and me, is that I can cook. I AM Italian after all. I won’t be seeing my MIL this Easter. It’s a 2 hour drive each way, and we are kind of swamped this weekend and unable to make that drive. We live in the “overnight guest” zone (don’t know if you remember that episode).
Have a great Easter weekend, Pete.

  3. Really, Lori? I LOVE Jesus Christ Superstar and am listening to the song you’ve embedded right now. I used to listen to it every Easter…but our record, then tape kept breaking because it had been listened to so much. This is such a fabulous musical. Steve Balsamo is incredible. It is so incredible listening to Jesus’ ego and his divinity through the song. Will now listen to some more JCS songs while reading blogs. Happy Easter to you, as well,
