~ The human condition [is] lost in thought.
~ The stream of thinking has enormous momentum …
~ The thinking mind is a powerful tool, but it is also … limiting when it takes over your life completely … you don’t realize it is only a small aspect of the consciousness …
~ Whenever you are immersed in compulsive thinking, you are avoiding what is. You don’t want to be where you are. Here, Now. The Present.
From Stillness Speaks by Eckhart Tolle
A continuation of quotes about being in the moment will be posted on Friday, by the same author.
I adore Eckhart. He is one of my latest heros along with Jeff Foster and many others. May we return to the Here & Now. This precious moment. Thank you!

So is he saying to not think so much?

Huh? What? I wasn’t thinking. 😉 Yes, to be still and listen to the silence.

But the silence is so loud! I can’t hear myself think.

Please forgive me Lori, my statements weres not personal; I prefer to believe my view is an objective observation kiddo, I am merely referring to Tolle’s statement within the bounds of context. I do not disagree with him, only to clarify the point Tolle appears to be making.

Understood, James. No offense taken. Always nice to get comments and conversation going. Oh, and I did respond to your first comment in case you didn’t see it.

In all due respect to the discipline Lori, when we read pathologically or surrender our thoughts to the void we open ourselves up to precisely what I am referring to below/above. Spiritual discernment assures, any discipline to the void is death, consequently, as far as I can see, God is absent.

Thank you for sharing your perspective, James. I prefer not to overthink the quotes, which is precisely the point. Humans tend to overthink things to the point of sickness. Sometimes we need merely trust in All That Is … the I Am.

Quotes are quotes. It is one persons thoughts on a subject. It is not the gospel or necessarily the truth.

This is true, Linda. It may not necessarily be true, but it also may not necessarily be false. Perhaps it depends on the perceiver. I’m especially a fan of quotes because they can say something profound with only a few words. I admire it, because sometimes I can use too many words when only a few words may be necessary.

I like quotes as well. I did not like James’ comments but he has a right to his view.

Then again, genius dwells within the subconscious mind.

If our subconscious mind becomes or conscious state, we are likely insane, or on the verge of a complete mental breakdown.
Nevertheless, I concede on this point.

“you don’t realize it is only a small aspect of the consciousness . . .” Are we to assume Tolle is referring to the subconscious mind here, Lori?

Make of it what you will, James. For me, quieting the mind helps in hearing spirit. Another way to put it would be … praying is talking to God, meditating (quieting the mind) is listening to God.
