Grocery Shopping and Underwear

My husband asked me to write a blog about underwear, and since he’s still recovering from an injury, I thought I’d oblige.

If there is anything that a crisis can teach a person, it’s gratitude for simple things.

The outer apparatus, more correctly named, the External Fixater holding my husband’s foot together was about a total of one foot wide.

He couldn’t stretch any type of underwear around it. Of course, jeans or pants were out of the question. His attire for the last eight weeks have consisted of basketball shorts and t-shirts (thank you to Mom for supplying his daily wear).

bkbshortsAs of Friday, the Fixater was removed. Yay!

He finally got to put on underwear for the first time in two months. Several times over the weekend he shined that charming smile of his, and in the most jubilant tone he’d say, “I’m wearing underwear!”

Who knew that someone could be ecstatic to wear underwear … so much so that he asked me to share his joy.

Keep in mind, he is still not able t0 put any weight on either foot yet, but the restrictions have brought up gratitude for things we normally wouldn’t even notice.

So good to hear that he is improving, Lori. But, what does this have to do with grocery shopping?

If there is any of the little things in life that I despise doing, it’s grocery shopping. In fact, I’m not much of a shopper at all. The only time you’ll find me enjoying it, is by the costume jewelry rack at an inexpensive department store (JC Penney comes to mind). Aside from galor2010that, I do not shop.

My husband did the grocery shopping for our household, but with his non-weight bearing predicament, this chore has fallen to me.

I have a new appreciation for my happy, underwear-wearing husband who took care of this tedious task for both of us.

Make no mistake, this blog post is about gratitude for the little things … like a husband who did the grocery shopping. And …

… Yay for underwear!

  1. I love this! I’m so glad to hear that your hubby is improving, albeit still slowly. And it makes me smile to think how happy he is to be wearing underwear again. Just goes to show that we sometimes don’t stop to think how good we have it, until those typical comforts are taken away from us.

  2. Amazing how you are still able to practice gratitude throughout this situation. Huzzah for underwear! It’s strange, the things we take for granted until we lose them. Hope the healing continues at top speed!

    1. HA! And he just found out he can try and stand up now. So, huzzah for standing and peeing. Hehe. Ahh, the simple things. Thanks for coming over to read this, Aussa. 🙂

  3. Glad to hear that things are going better. Can you order your groceries online? Years ago, I used to order them online and all I had to do was go in and pay for them. I think I even had them delivered once. Actually, it seemed like more trouble than it was worth, but I did it a few times.

    1. Hey Patty! A couple of weeks ago, I said to Gary that they ought to have where you can order groceries online and just go pay for them and pick them up. I didn’t know they actually had that anywhere. Unfortunately, I’m sure they don’t have that here, but I’d definitely do it if they did. Thanks for stopping in. Good to see you.

  4. Oh, this is cute. Who would have known that underwear could be a thing for which one would express so much gratitude? I am glad you pointed toward this post. I saw it the other day but somehow lost it in the busyness of hiking and biting flies and such. Wishing the best for your husband’s recovery, Lori. Such a challenging time for both of you.

  5. It’s great to see that you’re both maintaining your senses of humor through all of these trials. It really is the simplest things in life that give us the longest-lasting joys. One hurdle passed with the underwear. Now—on to two socks!

    1. Yay, for socks. You said the magic words, JM. He finally got two socks on today. Socks and underwear, a luxury. 🙂 Thanks so much for your kind words. I’m glad you can see our sense of humor come across in my post.

  6. It’s those things we don’t even think about that we miss when they’re not available to us… I’m not sure about the U.S. but in Australia going without underwear is called “going commando”, and no grocery shopping is called “going hungry”… or “going broke” if resorting to take away meals.
I’m pleased to hear underwear has been resumed 🙂

    1. Hehe, yes, underwear has been resumed. Yep, all those things you said are terms in Australia, are terms here too. No more commando for hubby. His fruit is back in the loom. Hehe. In case you didn’t know, Fruit Of The Loom is an underwear brand name. Thanks, EllaDee.

  7. It’s funny the things you enjoy when they are taken away. During my back injury I couldn’t bend to shave my legs. It was so nice to finally be able to do that after my surgery. 🙂

  8. Having gone through this with relatives more than once I have learned that when someone reaches a point in their life that they stop wearing underwear that this becomes kind of a permanent thing at times. The goal gets really murky at this point, hoping that you don’t freak out the neighbors or that the folks in the mall can see the real humor in life.

    1. I think they appreciated no hand-me-down underwear. Ha. Yep, socks are next. He’s wearing one sock on the left. The right might be able to fit one, but it’s still a bit swollen. Love ya, too Mom.

  12. We sure take a lot for granted, don’t we? You’ve just gone through a hard wake-up call. Who would have thought wearing underwear was such a big deal (until we tried going without it)? Who would have thought the grocery shopping was such a chore (until we have to do it). [I’m with you on the grocery shopping.] Good to hear that your husband is improving.
